20 Words or Less Poetry Contest Winner @ThoughtsInc

Shrouded in darkness.
My wings now broken and bound to the floor.
Because of you; I will fly no more.

This poem was selected as the winner of the 20 words or less Thoughtsinc.net April writing contest.

This poem is open to interpretation and I would love to hear how it touched you.

To me, it represents how the actions, words and unspoken promises of others can shatter our hopes and dreams. We too often forget how fragile others can be when it comes to their dreams and goals in life. The things that we say and do can crush their spirit... leaving them broken inside.

My October Poetry Contest Entry

Starting last month (September), I began entering into the monthly poetry contests over at ThoughtsInc.net. Each month Thoughts Inc has a theme and contest guidelines. Last months theme was 'Afterlife'. Here was my entry: Forsaken. I was ecstatic to find that for the month of September, I won first place! I received a $25 Amazon gift card, tons of congrats, a 1st place banner and this spiffy chipper feeling in my heart that I had accomplished something. :)

I am definitely an amateur writer. I do it because I love to express my thoughts and emotions on paper. Throughout my childhood when I was afraid or upset, writing helped me to release those emotions or to see clarity in the darkest places. I still write because of that... because of the clarity. Sometimes I feel like my own emotions are so strong that I cannot hear the desires of my heart. I believe if I write, I can calm the storm and hear myself again.

I realize that my punctuation may not be perfect nor is my grammar always at its' best, but for me none of those things really matter. What really matters is expressing myself. So when you lay eyes upon my writes, try not to read too deeply into a misplaced comma or occasional misspelling. Please try to look beyond the words. Let yourself escape into each word, immerse yourself in the emotion and for a moment... imagine you are someone else.

This months theme is 'Memories' and it must be 20 words or less. You can become a member at Thoughts Inc for free and join us each month in the poetry contests too! I have already sent in my poem for this month and the voting has already begun (voting starts on the 15th of each month), but I wanted to share it here with you all.

My memories are jaded.
Shards; cutting deep like an echo.
My past is yelling out to me.
"Let me go!"

About my short little poem: Jaded Memories
Memories are not perfection. Over time, they can become distorted and foggy. They are sometimes painful and cut away at us until inside we feel like we are nothing. We hide bits of things we have done that we are ashamed of; bits of who we once were in our memories to keep them away from the world we love.
Sometimes we forget our past choices and make the very same mistakes although there are tiny voices screaming in our heads saying, "Don't do this!"
To me, this short poem is symbolic of how loudly our memories and past choices can scream in our heads as well as reflect back into our souls as if we were looking into a broken mirror. An echo is something that is repetitive, something we hear over and over again. Sometimes our memories haunt us that way and they are not always happy moments so they cut us deeply, leaving scars that only we can feel. I am reminded of a Picasso painting when I think of our memories and how they effect our inner beings as we grow. We are imperfection. We are art that isn't finished yet. Every decision we make is a moment or a memory and each one helps to define us, alter us or shape us. Upon looking at ourselves and reflecting on who we once were or are becoming, we may find that we look a bit broken or skewed as well some of us may see that we have begun to paint more of a more eloquent picture.
It is the choices we make today that become the memories that will haunt us tomorrow. Make sure they're good ones.

Art Challenge: Public/ Smooth

I missed last week's challenge due to holiday shopping and attempting to visit with family and friends who live out of town. This week's 2 Things challenge is Public and Smooth. This one was a bit challenging on the 'smooth' part. I think I may have worked it out though. :)

Thank you so much 2 Things Blog and fellow artists who participate for allowing me to enter whenever I can. It's always a pleasure.

My entry for Public/Smooth. Don't forget that you can enter too!

Children's Playground at the park.

Parks are pretty well public areas. Also, slides are smooth lol, but that isn't going to be my entry for smooth. I thought instead that I would write a poem describing the intricate beauty of a perfect flawless diamond.

Poem titled: Perfection
by Kristina Conatser, All rights reserved

Soft to the touch.
My fingers gliding with ease over you.
There are no blemishes; not even one.
You are so smooth.
You are one of a kind.
You are perfection.

You shine so brightly.
You cast your prism of color on my face.
Within you there are no flaws; not even one.
You are so beautiful.
You are one of a kind.
You are perfection.

Have a bit of Fun, Finish This Poem...

I have decided that although this blog is very new and I do not have very many followers yet at all, I would like to attempt an interactive post. I have written a random poem- something fun and light- about a cat. I would like for you to play ad-lib with me and help me conclude it. Finish the story. Will you help me?

If you can't help, pass it around to your friends and family, let them help... anything silly, light and non-derogatory is welcomed(remember that young eyes may stumble upon this blog).

I warmly welcome you to play along with me. You can add as many lines or as few as you'd like. You may even give ideas. I would just like to see this take off in a way like nothing else before. No need to worry about punctuation, spelling or things of that nature... this is purely for fun. Can't wait to see what you can do. Share share share. Enjoy~!

This is the story of a cat...
A cat who thought that he was all that.
He had the look.
 He had the style.
He even had a flashy smile.
This cat, he had it all...
With soft fluffy fur,
and a  pink button nose.
He even had well-groomed toes.
All that wasn't enough for this cat.
What he wanted, oh it was much more than that.
What he wanted was tiny and grey.
Each time he tried to catch it,
it would scurry away.
(bit added by reader Ani):
He didn't want it for the reason you think.
He just liked it 'cause His nose was also pink.
(bit added by reader Myshelle):
Now our tiny and grey would scurry away, as fast as its little legs would carry it.
It has the jinx on our little minx.

Finish this story :) What happens next?

Never Alone- Poetry

It may seem overbearing at times as if it leaves you in the dark but when life gives you struggles, remember your faith.
Listen for my voice child, I will lead you home.
Don’t let evil surpass greatness. Remember that you are the light.
When you feel lost my child, take a moment to look within yourself. My spirit is within you guiding your way.
Not alone will you fight against demons... I will fight by your side. Together we will conquer your fears.
My child; take my hand and I will guide you.
You shall never again be left in the dark...I will light your way. Follow me my child, I will never leave you alone.

Imagining Freedom

Freedom Flyers © 2011Kristina Conatser (BWC Designs)

If I Were A Bird
Oh, how I wish I were a bird
To lift my feet from the ground
To get away for awhile
Oh, if only I were a bird

Oh, how I wish I were a bird
I would take flight into uncharted territory
Exploring the world from a new perspective
Oh, if only I were a bird

Oh, how I wish I were a bird
So many times I have dreamed this dream
Soaring high above the clouds in the sky
where not a soul could harm me
Oh, if only I were a bird

Oh, how I wish I were a bird
I would fly away right now
Leaving all of my troubles behind me.
Oh, if only I were a bird.

Mysterious & Beautiful Poem

Close your eyes
Envision the universe
Oh, how the twilight glistens
Mysterious and beautiful
Just as my love for you

When I close my eyes
I picture you
So perfect you are
Mysterious and beautiful
Just as my view of you

Looking through your eyes
Painting the universe
Oh, how pure is your heart
Mysterious and beautiful
Just as your everlasting love.

The poem above was written to express my love and adoration for our Lord, all of His beauty and mystery. I used to be one who viewed the world as if it were a glass full of bitterness, hate and ugliness. I envisioned no color; only shades of Gray. I wanted more out of life. I wanted to see more so I ripped off the Vail of pessimism and began to really open my eyes to the beauty all around me. I live to love His creations. His mysteries are my fascinations. I adore the works of His hands. I believe that a true Artist leaves a piece of himself in every creation. As I find myself admiring His works, I can see His face through them. I find new peace, new comfort and new hopes through looking at the beauty of creation I see all around me that has been shaped by His hands.

“We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls.”~Mother Teresa

Let your mind wonder and drift away into the realms beyond logic; beyond basic principle. Just feel. Use your initial instinct. As children, we simply knew that there is something there. We danced under the stars as if we are putting on a performance. We embraced the wind. We played in the rain. We just knew. Simply close your eyes... feel; believe again. Our emotions tell us that there is something there. Even when we don't want to believe, there is still a connection. Think about it. Many of us innately call out to God even in anger or if we don't believe. We often look in the upwards direction to see if anyone is looking back at us. This in itself, is a mystery. Many believe it is the spiritual bond we share with Him. No matter how far away we are from him spiritually, He is always there waiting on us to return just like the Father in the parable of the prodigal son. He is always there- the slight whistle in the wind, the crackle of the fire- he is there. Sometimes we simply must shut our eyes in order to see. His love is immeasurable and unconditional. His ways are mysterious and yet so beautiful.
